What’s New With The Cape Cod Baseball League

Are you counting down the days until the boys of summer take to the baseball field once again? Are you and your friends from the Southport retirement community on Cape Cod already making plans for opening day of the Cape Cod Baseball League? Whether you’re a long-time fan or have recently discovered a love for baseball now that you’ve got more time to relax and a great league, here’s some of the news coming out of the Cape Cod Baseball League as it prepares for the new season.

As the nation’s premier amateur baseball league since 1885, it’s no surprise that the Cape League is looking forward to a great season. One change to the season this year will be the start date. To better accommodate incoming players’ transition from the end of their college season to the League’s start, the 2017 season will start a week later than usual, with Opening Day on June 14, with a full slate of five games.

Fans of the doubleheader will be interested in the other change to this year’s season. Every team will play a doubleheader home and away this season. That means they will have two doubleheaders as part of the regular 44-game season. All of the doubleheaders will be played on the first two Sundays in June.

The Cape Cod Baseball League Commissioner Paul Galop describes the doubleheaders as a great way for fans to enjoy a full day of baseball while also getting to watch the cream of the crop of college players competing for a shot at someday getting to the big leagues. After all, 13 former Cape Leaguers played in the last World Series and many fans will be watching the new players to see who will go on to make it big.

Fans of the Friendly’s All-Star Game should mark their calendars for July 22. The All-Star Game and the Home Run Hitting Contest will take place that day at Clem Spillane Field, which has been home to the Wareham Gatemen since the 1960s.

For many residents of the Southport retirement community on Cape Cod, the Cape League games are a great way to spend an afternoon or evening with friends, cheering on a favorite team and enjoying friendly debates about which teams will make it to the end. The final game of the regular season is August 3, with the eight-team playoff format set to begin on August 5.
