Southport Residents Make a Difference

A quick look into the lifestyle offered at Southport on Cape Cod and you will see that it is a Massachusetts retirement community filled with residents that are actively involved with one another and their community. In addition to the games and sports that they play, hobbies they enjoy and classes that they take, the people of Southport get deeply involved in making a difference in their community and in the lives of others around them.

One cause in particular that a great many residents are especially passionate about is the annual Girlygirl P.A.R.T.S. 5k Walk/Run to fight ovarian cancer.

In 2008, Southport resident June Romeo received the news that no mother wants to hear about their child – June’s daughter Jill DiTommaso had been diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Determined not to allow the diagnosis to define her or slow her down, Jill and June, and Jill’s dear friend Laura Smith decided to take action. The women put their heads together and came up with the “Girlygirl P.A.R.T.S. 5k Run/Walk for Ovarian Cancer.” The clever name quickly drew attention, and the residents of Southport enthusiastically for the race year #1 and have been walking or running for ovarian cancer research ever since!

The acronym P.A.R.T.S. stands for Pre-Screening Awareness Required To Silence …the cancer, and the money that is raised goes directly toward the research of a pre-screening tool which helps to promote early detection, increasing the length of survival and survival rate of anyone who receives the diagnosis.

Jill DiTommaso fought cancer bravely for eight long years, finally succumbing to the disease on December 27, 2015. The number of walkers and contributors to Team Southport has only grown since that time, and each year they have surpassed the previous year’s fundraising total. Through 2016, the Girlygirl P.A.R.T.S. 5k Walk/Run event had raised more than $450,000, and the total number of participants now numbers into the thousands.

This year’s walk takes place on Saturday, September 16th, beginning at Craigville Beach in Centerville on Cape Cod. Last minute entrants are still welcome to join the group, and those unable to walk who wish to donate are encouraged to do so by going to .
