Local Non Profit Profile: Safe Harbor in Hyannis

One of the best parts of the holiday season is the power of giving. And nothing better exemplifies this holiday spirit than the recent Southport Annual Angel Tree Dinner where several of Southport’s outstanding residents showered children in need with gifts to ensure their holiday was a positive one. One of the benefactors of this event was Safe Harbor in Hyannis; a non-profit organization dedicated to provide a warm and safe home to eligible women and their children who are homeless due to domestic violence.

Safe Harbor in Hyannis is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development and the generous contributions of private donors. Thanks to this constant stream of funding, Safe Harbor can accommodate up to 20 families at their facility – providing Emergency Assistance to women and children who have no other options for a safe living environment. The Safe Harbor shelter offers comfortable and compassionate care with staff on duty 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

There are several elements that make Safe Harbor in Hyannis an outstanding non-profit organization that achieves positive results including:

  • Case Management / Housing Advocates: Through the assistance of working with a case manager, the families at Safe Harbor in Hyannis create a Family Life Plan. This permits these families to overcome the initial obstacles that often prevent them from being self-sufficient; and lays a direct path to achieving success.
  • Community Collaboration: Safe Harbor in Hyannis often partners with several outside agencies to ensure that the individual needs of residents and their children are addressed (during their stay at Safe Harbor and beyond).
  • Educational Workshops: This program helps families build healthy and happy bonds; giving them the educational tools they will need to break the cycle of domestic violence. Some of the workshops available include Parenting, Domestic Violence, Financial Literacy and Additional Employment Readiness.

The children’s center at Safe Harbor consists of several programs for toddlers, pre-school, infants and school-age kids. This program and others at Safe Harbor in Hyannis give children the tools to improve the overall function of families – and teaches children to work with their mothers to create an overall positive home environment.

Southport on Cape Cod is proud to support local non-profits such as the amazing team at Safe Harbor in Hyannis. And thanks to the outstanding generosity of the community, members who donated their time and gifts during the holiday season, several children were able to enjoy a happy holiday season while dealing with traumatic life events.
