Go Green at One of the Leading 55 Plus Communities in Massachusetts
As one of the leading 55 plus communities in Massachusetts, Southport on Cape Cod embraces energy efficiency technologies and practices, striving to maximize the energy efficiency in each home and reducing your energy bills.
Southport is proud to use The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index which is the industry standard by which a home’s energy efficiency is measured. It’s also the nationally recognized system for inspecting and calculating a home’s energy performance.
The HERS Index measures a home’s efficiency including how efficiently it’s operating. How does the HERS Index work?
A certified Home Energy Rater assesses the energy efficiency of each new home at Southport, assigning it a relative performance score. This is done by undergoing a two-hour “stress test” which helps to determine where any excessive “leaks” might be in the home whether in the windows, doors, etc. If any are found, they are corrected which helps to ensure that the heating and cooling of your home is done as efficiently as possible.
The U.S. Department of Energy has determined that a typical resale home scores 130 on the HERS Index while a standard new home is awarded a rating of 100. A home with a HERS Index Score of 70 is 30% more energy efficient than a standard new home.
Some of the variables included in an energy rating are:
- All exterior walls (both above and below grade)
- Floors over unconditioned spaces (like garages or cellars)
- Ceilings and roofs
- Attics, foundations and crawl spaces
- Windows and doors, vents and ductwork
- HVAC systems, water heating system, and your thermostat
Participating in the HERS program is just one more example of how Southport’s national award-winning home designs are not only enjoyable to live in, but also a great value to maintain. Just another reason why Southport is one of the leading 55 plus communities in Massachusetts
