Enjoy a Delicious Day Out at the Wellfleet Oyster Fest

over 55 communities in Massachusetts

It’s time for the 14th annual Wellfleet Oyster Fest on Cape Cod, where visitors support the town of Wellfleet’s shellfishing industry while enjoying its delicious bounty. Residents of over 55 communities in Massachusetts, such as Southport on Cape Cod, are sure to enjoy this popular weekend festival that offers plenty of entertainment along with a smorgasbord of tasty shellfish from local waters.

This two-day event on October 18-19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., is organized by Wellfleet Shellfish Promotion and Tasting, a non-profit organization that aims to create a better understanding of the town’s important shellfishing industry. As well as getting to taste the incredible local shellfish brought in by local fishermen, attendees enjoy music, arts and crafts, a shucking contest, and much more. Tickets are $5 for one day or $8 for a weekend pass, while children under 12 get in free, making it a fun outing for all family generations.

Visitors are spoiled for choice, with more than 86 artisans, 21 food vendors, 12 raw bars and 15 community organizations sharing goods and information. Throughout it all, there are musical performances by a variety of local favorites, family friendly activities and performances, educational lectures and walking tours, and even recreational activities such as a road race and a dance party.

Food is the biggest focus of the festival, of course. As well as the raw bars and food vendors, there is the highly anticipated Annual Oyster Shuck-Off competition. Men and women compete to see who can shuck 24 oysters in the fastest time, but style counts just as much as speed. Mangled oysters, broken shells, and even blood from cut fingers can lead to crucial time penalties. Last year’s winner, three-time champion Barbara Austin, is the only woman to win the Wellfleet competition and she’s also qualified to compete in the National Oyster Shucking Competition this year.

Even if you prefer not to shuck your own oysters, there are a number of culinary programs taking place that will give you plenty of tips to take home. Along with cooking demonstrations and cookbook signings, there is the Taste the Terroir and Merrior, which allows you to sample shellfish from various regions of Wellfleet along with wines produced in Truro.

Whether you’re looking for a laid-back outing with family and friends or a full culinary event, the Wellfleet Oyster Fest is an ideal outing when you’re looking for things to do on Cape Cod.
