Check Out Some of the Cape’s Favorite Bookstores

For bibliophiles, retirement means finally having all the time you want to sit down and immerse yourself in the wonderful world of books. Memoirs, fiction, thrillers, self-help, history, fantasy … now is your time to read every genre you love and explore ones you haven’t tried before. Retirement communities in MA, such as Southport, are ideal for feeding your book passion. As well as an on-site library, the Village Center has a comfy seating area with a fireplace that is perfect for settling in with your latest book. Plus, there are tons of great bookstores on the Cape. These are a few that are within easy reach of Southport.

You can’t get much closer than Market Street Bookshop at Mashpee Commons. With tall windows letting in the beautiful Cape Cod light, and tall bookshelves letting your mind travel anywhere it wants, this is a bookshop that caters to young and old and anyone who wants a good book. As well as the broad selection of books, you’ll also find local art and local authors, not to mention an owner who is always happy to help you find the perfect book. This is a book-lover’s paradise.

Celebrating 50 years in business, Titcomb’s Bookshop in East Sandwich is a family bookstore and area icon. Starting off in part of a 1690, three-quarter Cape-style home, the bookshop has become so popular that it’s now housed in a nearby three-story barn-style building that was built by two of the Titcomb sons. The setting is as charming and welcoming as the wrought-iron colonial man statue that stands outside the bookstore. In place since 1974, and created by one of the Titcomb sons, the figure has become a local icon and visiting authors regularly have their photo taken with him. The selection of books is vast and there’s almost always a popular author taking part in a book reading, signing, or some other book-related event. Considered one of the most unique bookstores in the world, it’s definitely worth regular visits.

Finally, if you don’t mind heading a little further out, there’s another family-run bookshop in Yarmouthport on the Old Kings Highway, Route 6A. Parnassus Book Service is a wonderful general bookstore that offers new and used books, including many old and rare editions. They also issue specialty catalogues on a broad range of topics from Americana to Maritime and much more. Search their website or stop in for a visit where the staff is always happy to help you find everything from the latest bestseller to that rare, hard-to-find book.

Cape Cod is an inspiration to writers and it shows up in old classics and the latest books to hit the market. Take advantage of living in Southport, one of the leading retirement communities in MA, and explore the books and the bookstores that celebrate the written word in such classic Cape style.
