Cape Cod Things to Do in October

Cape Cod retirement communities such as Southport understand that an active social life is just as important as a nice home and an attractive setting. Community and friendship keep people active and connected. As well as taking part in the many on-site activities and gatherings, homeowners at Southport enjoy getting together with friends to take in some of the many events going on in Cape Cod throughout the year.

Here are some of the upcoming October events to add to your social calendar:

Cape Cod Cranberry Day: Cranberries are an important — and delicious — part of Cape Cod’s history. On October 3, visit the Green Briar Nature Center and Jam Kitchen in East Sandwich for a day celebrating this native fruit. There will be cooking demonstrations using antique recipes, tours of the neighboring cranberry bog, and a chance to enjoy the beautiful grounds, trails and small animal residents. You can also sample jams in the gift shop and browse a used book sale whose proceeds go to the Nature Center’s in-house natural history library. There will also be delicious homemade cranberry crisp, clam chowder and chili for sale as a perfect accompaniment to a fine fall day.

Taylor Bray Farm Fall Festival: The Taylor-Bray Farm was originally settled in 1639. On October 10, the historic 22-acre farm will host a variety of traditional fall festival events, including hayrides, games, hearth cooking, face painting, a free giant pumpkin raffle for the kids, live music, and refreshments.

Bourne Farm Pumpkin Day: Pumpkins are one of the most beloved symbols of fall’s arrival. Whether cooked up in a pie or used for decoration, there’s plenty to love about pumpkins. On October 10, at Bourne Farm, celebrate the arrival of all things autumn, including the mighty pumpkin, at Pumpkin Day in North Falmouth. The event features hayrides, pony rides, arts and crafts, kayaks and paddle boats, face painting, and plenty of pumpkins for the picking!

Wellfleet OysterFest: Residents of Cape Cod retirement communities like Southport won’t want to miss the 15th annual Wellfleet OysterFest taking place October 17-18. This wonderful festival celebrates the town’s famous oysters, clams and shellfishing traditions and is a great way to bring together both locals and tourists. Visitors will enjoy local cuisine, arts and crafts, educational programs, cooking demonstrations, children’s activities, walking tours, theatre, live music, a road race, and the annual Oyster Shuck-Off competition.
